Meridians
The links between the systems
The Neurological Integration System tests and corrects imbalances in the naturopathic triangle of physical, chemical and emotional aspects of health.
- NIS also uses information from the meridian system (as used in chinese traditional medicine and acupunture).
Any of the 'sides of the naturopathic triangle' or meridians can manifest
as symptoms in any of the other dimensions
How physical dysfunction affects the whole body
For example: a person who sits in front of a computer for long periods without getting up regularly to move and stretch, can develop short and tight psoas muscles (which are kidney meridian muscles).
Structurally:
this person may experience a gradual onset of lower back pain (psoas muscles have a huge impact on lower back health).
On an emotional level:
they may experience more
anxiety (the
emotional state associated with the kidney meridian).
And because all the meridians are connected in a circular flow of energy,
a build up in one can affect the others.
In our example, neck muscles associated with the kidney meridian (the intertransversarii) may result a stiff neck. Other neck muscles (the flexors and extensors of the neck) are on the stomach meridian.
This might result in an irritated stomach meridian, resulting in discomfort with that persons digestion e.g. heartburn, or reflux.
Or drinking too much coffee, whilst sitting long hours at the desk, could cause an over-activation of the triple warmer meridian – specifically the adrenal glands; which can cause the sartorius, hamstrings, and calf muscles to become hypertonic; resulting in any combination of groin/hip pain, knee pain, and/or achilles tendon pain.
